Monty Taylor founded Montgomery Taylor and Company LLC in his pursuit to provide the best integrated financial planning, investment and tax services to his clients. As both a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Financial Planner, Monty has over 30 years of investment and financial advisory experience. His passion is working with middle- to high-income clients to help them achieve their financial goals and the stability and lifestyle they’re seeking for and during retirement.
As a highly credentialed professional in the investment consulting industry and an experienced institutional manager, he has worked as a key executive for a $700 million pension plan. As a personal wealth advisor, he has coached many high net-worth individuals and couples in Sonoma and Marin counties. Monty personally counsels individual clients on wealth management strategies, and he is readily accessible for questions and financial and/or tax consultations with his clients. Monty grew up in the Alexander Valley of Sonoma County. He married his junior college sweetheart, Terri, in 1979, and they have three grown children and two grandchildren.
Gregg Gillaspy joined our firm in January 2018. Upon graduating from college Gregg started his career with Arthur Andersen’s tax department in St. Louis, MO before establishing his own CPA firm in 1992. He sold his firm in 2006 and gained valuable exposure to private accounting for ten years. Capitalizing on what he does best, in 2016 Gregg began providing tax preparation support and a deep level of tax planning to CPA firms across the country such as MT&C.
Gregg has the distinction of being certified in two professions, Accounting and Financial Planning, and is one of the rare individuals who is a CPA without having an accounting degree. Gregg’s degree is in Business Administration: Finance & Banking from the University of Missouri – Columbia.
Gregg and his wife Nancy have four boys, one grandson and finally two granddaughters! Gregg has been involved in most all sports, completed a 100-mile triathlon while in college and coached baseball, basketball, and football teams that his sons have been on. Gregg also enjoys military “stuff” and anything that flies.
Matt Taylor joined our firm in January 2018. He graduated from Sonoma State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration/Finance. Since then, for the past 18 years, he has been helping individuals, families, and businesses work toward their financial goals. His experience provides a new perspective for our firm. He has worked for several banks in different capacities, from Commercial banking to being a Financial Advisor. He has also managed trades for Trust and Estate clients. He has helped his clients in areas such as money management, loan acquisition, financial planning, portfolio and trade-management, and life insurance. He is a licensed California Life Insurance Agent and has his FINRA Series 7, 63, & 65 licenses. He has also nearly completed his CFP certification.
Matt has a rich family history with deep roots anchored in Sonoma County. He was born and raised in Sonoma County, as were his parents before him. For over 20 years, Matt has been an avid free diver and scuba diver. Also, in his free time, he loves to go hiking and camping.
Sandy Koppen joined us in December of 2009. Prior to that time, Sandy devoted most of her energy to raising her two daughters and contributing her abilities to serving in a variety of volunteer positions in organizations ranging from Girl Scouts and Habitat for Humanity to her daughter’s schools and her church congregation. Originally from Minnesota, she has lived in California since 1990. Sandy has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities as well as an Account Clerk certificate from Santa Rosa Junior College. Sandy is a CTEC (California Tax Education Council) certified tax preparer and IAR (Investment Advisory Representative), and is currently working toward her CFP (Certified Financial Planner) designation. Sandy finds satisfaction in helping clients better understand their financial picture so they can make good decisions for their future. When she gets the chance, Sandy enjoys singing, reading, gardens, and weekend RV camping trips.
Sheila Miller joined the MT& C office in July of 2018. She grew up in Healdsburg and attended UC Davis and Empire College School of Law. After a career in family law, she focused on estate planning, probate, and estate administration. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Estate Planning law from Golden Gate University. She has also been a lecturer to other attorneys regarding avoiding probate. She regularly volunteers for Recourse Mediation Services as a mediator in elder law matters.
Sheila loves to spend time in the garden: sitting under the oak in the backyard and admiring its spreading branches; tending the vegetable garden; and checking for ripening fruit on the peach and apple trees. When it’s time to repair to the house, Sheila likes to listen to recorded books and knit. She likes to admire her two senior dogs, who are really cute. She “plays” the piano and goes to lessons every other week. When not at work or at home, Sheila is often traveling.
John Byrne merged his practice into our firm in November 2015, adding many years of experience. Before joining our team John Byrne, CPA had been in practice in Santa Rosa either in partnerships or as a sole practitioner since 1976. He has worked in public accounting since graduating from California State University, Chico in 1969. He worked in Santa Rosa and then in St. Helena before coming back to Santa Rosa to form a partnership in 1976. John’s practice was primarily centered on income tax planning and preparation. John and his wife Kathy have three grown children and four grandchildren spread across the country; they do a fair amount of traveling to see their kids. Kathy is a watercolor artist and John enjoys helping her with her shows.
Kelly Mills joined our team in September of 2013 as our Financial Services Specialist and is now our Office Manager. Although originally an East Coast girl, Kelly spent the majority of her upbringing in beautiful Lake Tahoe where she spent her days wake-boarding, skiing, hiking, swimming, camping, and enjoying the wondrous outdoors as well as studying dance. Upon completion of high school she moved to Santa Cruz to not only attend UCSC, but also play soccer for the Banana Slugs. Santa Cruz brought many adventures, but alas after graduation (with a degree in Early Modern Literature) she began a new escapade and moved to Santa Rosa to attend Graduate school at Sonoma State University.
Rachel Harlin joined our team in October 2015 as our Receptionist and now works as our Marketing Associate. She has an Associate’s Degree in Fine Arts from Casper Community College majoring in vocal performance. She has had experience as a personal banker, bookkeeper, and administrative assistant. During a period of time as a stay-at-home mom she fell in love with books and writing, and published a romance novel in 2009. She moved to Santa Rosa in 2014 and loves the fall colors and much warmer winters. In her spare time Rachel enjoys reading, writing, singing, baking, and spending time with her husband, Jason, and their eight beautiful daughters.
Josalynn Kirby joined our team in October 2017 as our Front Office Specialist and is now our Operations Associate. She studied Administrative Justice and Psychology at the Santa Rosa Junior College before switching focus into Administrative Assistance. Sonoma County raised, she has enjoyed living in multiple towns in the county before settling in Hopland, where she and her husband help care for family. Free time leaves no dull days as she enjoys reading, cooking, baking, racing track karts, working the food stand at a nearby race track, and generally going on adventures with her daughter.
Denelle Rhodes joined our team in July 2018 as our new Front Office Specialist. She is originally from a small town in Kansas, but she moved to California with her family in 2008 when she was about 10 years old. After moving from various cities in Sonoma county, including Rohnert Park and Cotati, she and her family eventually settled and fell in love with Santa Rosa. She recently graduated from Maria Carrillo High School in June of 2016. In her free time, Denelle enjoys traveling up to Cloverdale to visit the wonderful Russian River to swim her day away. Denelle also looks forward to visiting her parents’ chicken farm in Mendocino county.
Cheryl Mott joined us in May 2018 as our bookkeeper. After a long career working as an administrative and personal assistant, she returned to college and earned a certificate in accounting. Since that time, she has worked for a bookkeeping service and continued to study. She earned her Certified Public Bookkeeper license in 2017. Cheryl and her husband, Nigel, moved to Santa Rosa from England in 1992. Cheryl was born in Kent, England, but before moving here spent most of her years living and working in London. She enjoys Nutrition, health, and fitness and, although cooking isn’t one of her favorite things to do, she finds it rewarding to cook from scratch as often as possible.
Barbara Shaw joined us in 2008 as our Client Services Manager and is now our seasonal Tax Preprarer. Barbara was a Business Education teacher for 20 years at the high school and junior college level. She retired after 17 years of teaching at Rancho Cotate High School in Rohnert Park through the Sonoma County Regional Occupational Program. In 2001 she was recognized by Sonoma County’s School to Career Partnership as “Outstanding Career Education Teacher”. In addition to her teaching background, Barbara has over 20 years of experience working in accounting and office administration. Barbara graduated from Humboldt State University with a B.S. in Business Administration/Accounting. She completed graduate work in Education, Counseling and Technology. Barbara enjoys spending time with her family and friends, gardening, reading, traveling and taking photos. She can often be found enjoying the redwoods at her cabin on the Mendocino coast.
