The Social Security Administration has announced improvements to the internet services that are available at www.socialsecurity.gov. Visitors to the site can see how much their retirement benefit will be by using the new Retirement Estimator. And, you can file for monthly retirement or disability benefits online.

Over 8 million users have set up an online “My Social Security” account. You can use your “My Social Security” account to obtain a copy of your Social Security Statement to check your earnings record for accuracy and see future estimates of the retirement, disability and survivor benefits you or your family may receive.

If you are already receiving a check, you can change your address online, set up or change direct deposit of benefits, request an income statement (SSA-1099), and access many other services. You can also obtain information about applying for a replacement Social Security Card.

The Social Security website also has numerous publications and other materials that can be downloaded. If you are interested in having taxes withheld from your Social Security checks, you can get information at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/planners/taxwithold.htm
